Environment-Based Waste Management in Banyumas Becomes a Model for Other Regions

Enviro News Asia, Banyumas – Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo has called for the Environmentally and Educationally Based Final Disposal Site (BLE) located in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, to serve as a model for other regions. In addition to being environmentally friendly and efficient, the BLE landfill also holds economic value, benefiting the local community.

This request was conveyed by Minister Dody Hanggodo during his visit to the BLE landfill in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, on Sunday (January 12, 2025). He was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti, Acting Regent of Banyumas Iwanuddin Iskandar, and Banyumas elected Regent Sadewo Tri Lastiono.

The BLE landfill is an innovative waste management solution that integrates circular economy and waste-to-energy concepts with a zero-waste-to-landfill approach. The project was constructed using funds from the State Budget (APBN) amounting to IDR 46.5 billion, supplemented by the Regional Budget (APBD) with an allocation of IDR 7.8 billion.

Construction of the BLE landfill began in October 2020 and was completed in December 2021, followed by optimization in 2023. The waste processing system at the landfill is highly innovative. Organic waste, such as food scraps and agricultural residues, is processed into compost and maggot feed. Meanwhile, the treatment of inorganic waste produces plastic paving/roof tiles and refuse-derived fuel (RDF), which serves as an alternative fuel to replace coal.

During his visit, Dody Hanggodo stated that the BLE landfill could become a model for all districts and cities in implementing sustainable zero-waste-to-landfill waste management practices. “Once waste enters this facility, the residual output is almost zero. The hope is that all districts and cities can achieve this, and the most crucial part is encouraging people not to litter. People need to sort their waste, which will make it easier to process waste at the BLE landfill,” he said.

Head of the Banyumas Environmental Agency, Widodo Sugiri, explained that Banyumas residents are encouraged to participate in waste sorting. They can use the Salinmas and Jeknyong applications to receive monetary incentives. “If residents do not have time to sort waste, they can subscribe to community-based groups that process organic and inorganic waste into economically valuable products,” said Widodo. With the BLE landfill and active community participation, it is hoped that waste management in Banyumas will become more effective and efficient while positively impacting the environment.
