Enviro News Asia, South Tangerang – Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency of Indonesia (KLH/BPLH), joined members of Generasi Muda Buddhis Indonesia (GEMARBUDHI) to pour 10,000 liters of eco enzyme into the Jeletreng River, a tributary of the Cisadane River, as part of efforts to restore the river’s water quality.
The activity took place in South Tangerang and successfully set a record with the Museum Rekor Indonesia (MURI) for the largest eco enzyme pouring activity. The initiative symbolized community participation, particularly from young people, in protecting and restoring the environment.
Minister Hanif expressed appreciation for the active involvement of GEMARBUDHI in the effort to rehabilitate the Cisadane River.
“We are very proud of the active participation of young people in concrete actions to restore the Cisadane River. Hopefully, this activity will inspire the broader community to take part in protecting the environment,” he said.
The eco enzyme pouring is part of the government’s response to pollution in the Cisadane River caused by a pesticide warehouse fire at PT Biotek Saranatama on February 9, 2026. The incident released organophosphate compounds into the river, which are toxic to aquatic life and caused mass fish deaths along a 41-kilometer stretch of the river reaching the coastal area of Teluk Naga.
Following the incident, KLH/BPLH implemented several response measures, including securing remaining chemical materials, establishing environmental monitoring lines by Environmental Supervisory Officers (PPLH), initiating criminal and civil law enforcement processes, and preparing a bioremediation program in collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (BRIN) if pesticide residues in river sediments remain at high levels.
“The river is not only the lifeline of our lives today, but also determines the quality of life for our children and grandchildren in the future. Let us show the world that we are capable of protecting our rivers, because our rivers represent our future,” Minister Hanif emphasized.
The Ministry of Environment hopes that this eco enzyme initiative will contribute to the broader restoration of the Cisadane River’s water quality. Active participation from communities, youth groups, and various stakeholders is considered essential to ensure that the river can return to a clean and healthy condition for present and future generations.
