Environment Minister Asserts Indonesia’s Energy Transition Must Go Hand in Hand with Environmental Protection at London Global Forum

Enviro News Asia, London – The Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) have reaffirmed Indonesia’s absolute commitment to ensuring the global energy transition proceeds in tandem with environmental protection and ecosystem conservation. The stance was delivered directly by Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH Moh. Jumhur Hidayat during a high-level session at the Global Electrification and Transition Energy Summit (GETES) 2026, held at Mansion House, London, on Tuesday (6/23).

The move underscores Indonesia’s position as one of the world’s largest megadiverse nations, whose vast tropical forests, peatlands, and mangrove ecosystems serve as critical pillars in maintaining global climate balance. KLH/BPLH has committed to sustaining harmony between economic acceleration, energy transition, and natural resource protection as the foundation of sustainable development.

“For Indonesia, the transformation ahead must be carried out responsibly. We ensure that every development step taken continues to uphold strict environmental standards in line with our national climate commitments,” Minister Jumhur said.

Indonesia’s policy direction aligns with calls made by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who addressed world leaders and energy sector CEOs at the forum, stressing the urgency of accelerating a fair, inclusive energy transition that leaves no country behind.

“This forum carries an urgent task at an urgent time, namely to accelerate the energy transition with speed, scale, and justice, and to build a new global economy that benefits everyone, underpinned by clean and affordable electricity,” Guterres said.

He further emphasized that the shift to clean energy must not be seen merely as a technical instrument for reducing carbon emissions, but must deliver tangible positive impact, create new jobs, and uphold the dignity of people worldwide.

“This transition must benefit everyone, creating opportunity, dignity, and sustainable development,” Guterres added.

Responding to the global discourse, Minister Jumhur reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to implement this framework through an integrated approach placing nature conservation at its core.

“Our priority is to ensure that the direction of development policy remains integrated with strong environmental guidelines. This approach serves as the foundation for Indonesia to maintain consistency between economic growth and environmental conservation targets,” Jumhur said.

The Indonesian delegation also used the occasion to invite global partners to strengthen fair and transparent multilateral cooperation.

“Indonesia is fully committed to continuing to strengthen responsible development practices. We welcome strategic partnerships grounded in trust and transparency in pursuit of sustainable development goals for all,” Minister Jumhur concluded.

Indonesia’s active and prominent participation in GETES 2026 in London demonstrates to the world that national emission reduction targets and economic recovery need not come at the expense of ecological integrity. Through KLH/BPLH’s leadership, Indonesia is confident it can achieve a just green future for all Indonesians and the global community. (*)
