Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry is strengthening governance in the forestry sector by improving its public licensing services to make them more effective, transparent, and accountable. The initiative was announced by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni during a leadership meeting held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Jakarta on August 3, 2026.
The minister emphasized that enhancing public services must become the ministry’s top priority over the next six months as part of broader efforts to improve governance and increase public trust in forestry administration.
Raja Juli Antoni said the ministry aims to establish a more open and transparent service system that provides greater certainty for businesses, communities, and other stakeholders involved in the forestry sector.
To achieve this objective, the minister outlined four key principles that every public service must fulfill: a clearly defined service name, transparent and unambiguous administrative requirements, a specified processing timeframe, and clearly stated service fees.
The Ministry of Forestry reported that it had issued 2,104 forestry licensing services between 2024 and July 2026, covering 42 different service categories managed by five Directorate General-level units.
According to ministry data, the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) processed the highest number of permits with 1,126 licenses. It was followed by the Directorate General of Forestry Planning with 478 permits, the Directorate General of Social Forestry with 410 permits, the Directorate General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation (PDASRH) with 51 permits, and the Directorate General of Sustainable Forest Management (PHL) with 39 permits.
The ministry stated that continuous improvements in licensing services are intended to provide greater business certainty while supporting sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and community empowerment through professional, transparent, and accountable forestry governance.
The initiative forms part of the Ministry of Forestry’s broader agenda to modernize public administration and strengthen institutional performance, ensuring that forestry services contribute to sustainable development while maintaining high standards of public accountability. (*)
