Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia is strengthening its clean energy ecosystem to support national energy independence amid growing energy demand and global supply chain challenges.
The government is bringing together businesses, academics and other stakeholders through the 12th IndoEBTKE Convention and Exhibition (ConEx) 2026 to accelerate the development of new and renewable energy and energy conservation.
Vice Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot opened the event in Jakarta on Wednesday (Sept. 2), marking the return of the forum after a three-year hiatus. The event provides a platform to discuss regulatory, technological, infrastructure, logistics, financing, research and innovation challenges in developing clean energy.
Yuliot said strengthening new and renewable energy is a government priority because global geopolitical developments can disrupt energy supply chains and increase energy prices, inflation, production costs, as well as energy subsidies and compensation.
“New and renewable energy is part of the government’s priority programs under the Asta Cita, including strengthening national resilience and promoting national self-reliance through energy self-sufficiency,” Yuliot said.
Under the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025–2034, the government has planned around 70 gigawatts of additional power generation capacity. About 42.6 GW, or approximately 62 percent, is expected to come from new and renewable energy sources.
The government is also promoting biofuel use through the implementation of the B50 biodiesel program. Energy conservation efforts include accelerating electric vehicle adoption, expanding gas networks, using compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative to LPG, and increasing the use of other clean energy sources.
Waste-to-energy is another component of the government’s clean energy strategy. Indonesia generated an estimated 52.6 million tons of waste in 2025, equivalent to around 145,000 tons per day, but only about 25 percent was managed.
Through waste-to-energy technology, urban waste can be converted into electricity, biomass and renewable fuels while helping reduce pollution and improve public health.
However, Yuliot said developing the clean energy sector requires an integrated domestic supply chain. Strengthening raw material supplies, manufacturing capacity, technology and human resources is essential to prevent the clean energy transition from creating new dependence on imported technologies.
“The important thing is how we build an integrated new and renewable energy ecosystem. We need to integrate the supply chain, from raw materials to manufacturing, technology and human resources,” he said.
Indonesia has mineral resources such as bauxite, nickel, silica and copper that could support the development of solar panels, batteries and other clean energy technologies.
The government therefore sees technology development, domestic manufacturing, research, innovation and the growth of national businesses as essential components of a stronger renewable energy ecosystem.
Through IndoEBTKE ConEx 2026, the government expects collaboration among stakeholders to help identify and overcome barriers to clean energy development. A stronger clean energy ecosystem is expected to improve national energy security and support Indonesia’s development toward 2045. (*)
