Indonesia’s Forestry Sector and Verra Strengthen Collaboration on High-Integrity Carbon Trading

Enviro News Asia, Washington, D.C. — The Indonesian Government, forestry industry stakeholders, and international carbon standards organization Verra have strengthened collaboration to accelerate the development of high-integrity and high-quality carbon trading in Indonesia’s forestry sector following the issuance of Ministry of Forestry Regulation No. P.6/2026 on Carbon Trading Procedures through Greenhouse Gas Emission Offsets in the Forestry Sector.

The commitment to closer cooperation was highlighted during a meeting between the Indonesian delegation and Verra on Friday (15/05/2026).

Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Indroyono Soesilo stated that the issuance of Regulation P.6/2026 provides a clearer legal framework for accelerating carbon trading through emission offset schemes from Indonesia’s forestry sector.

“With the issuance of Regulation P.6/2026, Indonesia now has a stronger and clearer foundation to accelerate forestry sector carbon trading. Verra’s future role will also become increasingly strategic as interest among Indonesia’s forestry business sector in utilizing Verra methodologies continues to grow,” Indroyono said.

He emphasized that strengthening human resource capacity is essential to ensuring Indonesian carbon projects can generate high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits.

Indroyono added that Indonesia needs to deepen cooperation with Verra, particularly in technical capacity building and strengthening carbon verification systems, to ensure Indonesian forestry carbon projects meet international standards while increasing confidence in the global carbon market.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Forest Concessionaires Association (APHI), Soewarso, revealed that 16 carbon projects developed by APHI members are currently categorized as fast-track projects eligible for carbon credit trading under the Verra scheme.

“APHI hopes Verra can accelerate the verification, validation, and issuance processes for carbon credits while continuing to comply with the procedures stipulated in Regulation P.6/2026,” Soewarso stated.

He explained that interest among APHI members in developing carbon projects under the Verra scheme continues to increase alongside the rapid growth of Indonesia’s voluntary carbon market.

According to Soewarso, APHI aims to establish closer cooperation with Verra, particularly in strengthening human resource capacity, enhancing methodologies, and developing forestry carbon projects with high integrity.

Senior Director of Sustainable Development, Program Development & Innovation at Verra, Sinclair Vincent, welcomed the issuance of Regulation P.6/2026, describing it as an important milestone in advancing carbon project development, particularly voluntary carbon market schemes in Indonesia.

“Verra is open to expanding cooperation with APHI in human resource capacity building to support the development of high-integrity and high-quality carbon credits,” Sinclair said.

He added that Verra is currently committed to accelerating verification, validation, and carbon credit certification processes while remaining aligned with the provisions stipulated in Regulation P.6/2026.

In addition, Verra continues to encourage methodologies under its certification scheme to obtain recognition from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as part of broader efforts to strengthen the integrity of the global voluntary carbon market.

The meeting formed part of broader efforts to reinforce Indonesia’s position as one of the world’s largest forest carbon potential holders while expanding opportunities for green investment based on sustainable forest management.

Collaboration between the government, forestry industry players, and international standards institutions is expected to accelerate the development of credible and transparent carbon projects that contribute to forest protection, climate change mitigation, and improved livelihoods for communities living around forest areas.
