IPCC Experts Advance Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers in Rome

Enviro News Asia, Geneva — More than 130 experts from over 50 countries have gathered in Rome for the third Lead Author Meeting of the Methodology Report on Short-Lived Climate Forcers (SLCF), organized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The meeting, hosted at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization, focuses on advancing the Second Order Draft of the 2027 report, which will provide guidance on national inventories of short-lived climate pollutants.

Co-Chair of the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Takeshi Enoki, described the meeting as a critical stage in consolidating scientific and methodological approaches to ensure a robust draft.

The report aims to guide countries in estimating emissions of key short-lived climate forcers, including nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, which have significant impacts on air quality and climate change at both global and regional levels.

Authors are expected to finalize the Second Order Draft during this phase, which will be open for expert and government review from August 31 to October 25, 2026.

Co-Chair Mazhar Hayat emphasized that the review process is essential to enhancing the clarity, reliability, and usability of the report before its finalization.

The outline of the methodology report was previously agreed upon during the 61st Session of the IPCC held in Sofia in July–August 2024. The final report is scheduled for completion in 2027.

The development of this report is led by the IPCC Task Force Bureau, in coordination with relevant Working Groups, to ensure comprehensive and scientifically grounded guidance for global emissions reporting. (*)
