Enviro News Asia, Bonn — The Climate High-Level Champions and the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action have launched a new annual Work Programme to accelerate the implementation of climate commitments over the coming year. The programme brings together governments, businesses, cities, regions, investors and civil society under the Global Climate Action Agenda’s new five-year vision for 2026–2030.
The programme focuses on turning existing climate commitments into practical results for communities, including through cleaner air, energy security and stronger climate resilience. It builds on the renewed Action Agenda launched at COP30, with an emphasis on implementing existing commitments at greater speed and scale and translating the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake into practical action supporting national climate and adaptation plans.
The 2026 Work Programme covers six major thematic areas and establishes 30 shared objectives supported by 120 practical plans aimed at removing barriers, strengthening collaboration and scaling proven climate solutions. In line with the priorities of the COP31 Presidency, particular attention will be given to areas including the clean energy transition, food security and zero waste.
The new governance structure includes Axis Coordination Groups, 30 Activation Groups, an Advisory Group of senior leaders and Communities of Action. The structures are designed to improve coordination, strengthen transparency, encourage broader stakeholder participation and accelerate the delivery of climate solutions.
UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said the focus of global climate action has shifted firmly toward implementation, while the Climate High-Level Champions emphasized that climate solutions must reach people on the ground, particularly communities most exposed to climate change. The launch comes as preparations intensify for COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, and marks ten years since the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action was established at COP22. (*)
