Enviro News Asia, Yogyakarta — The third edition of the Kenali Lingkungan Bareng Anak Muda (KELANA) experiential environmental learning program, themed “Java Overtrip,” continued in Yogyakarta on Sunday (August 9), involving 13 high school students in field-based learning on energy distribution, biodiversity conservation, circular economy and environmental advocacy.
The program, initiated by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), brought participants to PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Rewulu, where they learned about energy distribution, environmental management and biodiversity conservation. They also observed the facility’s circular economy practices, including composting, plastic waste processing, maggot cultivation, biofloc fish farming and the use of residual waste as an alternative energy source.
The participants then visited the Bantul Class IIB Detention Center to learn about an eco-furniture program that transforms plastic waste into functional products while providing inmates with practical skills. They also visited TPS3R Gosari in Guwosari Village, where community-based waste management has helped reduce waste while creating green job opportunities for local residents.
The Yogyakarta leg concluded with a discussion with the Yogyakarta branch of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI), where participants discussed ecological challenges ranging from coastal to urban areas. The students were encouraged to develop critical, data-based perspectives on environmental issues and to combine criticism with constructive solutions.
KLH/BPLH said the KELANA program is designed to equip young people with practical environmental knowledge while encouraging them to become informed, critical and responsible agents of change who can promote environmental protection through data-based advocacy and concrete action. (*)
