Minister of Environment Seals Off Sea Fence in Bekasi: Damaging the Environment

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment (KLH) sealed off a sea fence in the reclamation area of Kampung Paljaya, Segara Jaya Village, Tarumajaya, Bekasi Regency, on Thursday (January 30).

PT Tunas Ruang Pelabuhan Nusantara (TRPN) was found to have carried out sea fencing and reclamation activities in Bekasi, West Java, without obtaining approval for the Marine Space Utilization Activity Compliance (KKPRL).

“This must be regulated properly. Moving forward, we will review all reclamation activities. This is important,” said Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq at the site.

The 2.5-hectare reclamation area belongs to PT TRPN. The sealing process was carried out by installing a banner measuring 1 meter by 1.5 meters, mounted on iron poles at the entrance gate and the reclamation area.

The Ministry of Environment also set up boundary lines around the reclamation area. This action was taken as the reclamation project was suspected of violating Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management.

“We have gathered data from satellite imagery to administrative documents, and we are standing at a site that lacks environmental permits. So, this must be regulated,” Hanif stated.

According to Hanif, sea fence reclamation activities could disrupt marine ecosystems and spatial planning. “If the sea is turned into land, it will impact water management from upstream to downstream,” he explained.

The Ministry of Environment will re-examine environmental procedures by coordinating with the West Java Provincial Government.

“Even if the province has issued environmental permits, we, as the ministry, will reassess them,” he added.

Previously, on January 15, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) had also sealed off the sea fence because the company lacked approval for Marine Space Utilization Activity Compliance (PKKPRL).

Doni Ismanto Darwin, Special Staff to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, explained that after completing the initial field validation, KKP would conduct an in-depth examination of PT TRPN in early February 2025.
