Minister of Environment Urges Local Governments to Supervise Waste Management in Markets

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has instructed the Environmental Services Agency (DLH) at the provincial and district/city levels to tighten supervision over waste management in markets across Indonesia.

Hanif made this statement while attending the Market Clean-Up Action event at Pasar Atas, Cimahi City, as part of the 2025 National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) commemoration on Saturday (22/2/2025). On this occasion, he emphasized the importance of continuous and periodic supervision to ensure better waste management.

“We will instruct all DLH personnel, both at the provincial and district/city levels, to conduct ongoing supervision of waste management in markets throughout Indonesia,” said Hanif.

Hanif also stressed that HPSN 2025 is a crucial moment to raise public awareness about the importance of proper waste management. He is optimistic that, with support from various stakeholders, Indonesia’s waste problem can be managed more effectively.

Furthermore, Hanif highlighted that markets are one of the main contributors to waste accumulation in Indonesia. Therefore, he urged all community members to participate in the national movement to clean markets and ensure that waste does not end up directly in final disposal sites (TPA) without undergoing proper management.

As a concrete step, the Ministry of Environment will collaborate with the Ministry of Trade to implement the Clean Market Program. This program aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to TPAs and ease the burden of waste management in these areas.

At the same event, Deputy Minister of Trade (Wamendag) Dyah Roro Esti Widiaputri stated that market waste is an urgent issue in various regions of Indonesia. According to her, markets are the second-largest waste contributors after the household sector.

To address this issue, Dyah Roro called for the National Movement for Cleaning Up Waste Across the Archipelago. She hopes this movement will become an annual initiative involving all stakeholders, including the public and traders, in efforts to create cleaner and more comfortable market environments.
