Enviro News Asia, Mataram – PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has conducted a public consultation as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) process for the planned construction of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage and regasification facility in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, supporting Indonesia’s transition toward cleaner and more reliable energy.
The consultation took place on August 4 at the Tanjung Karang Permai Village Office in Mataram. It involved representatives from the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government, Mataram City Government, environmental and energy agencies, security authorities, community leaders, fishermen, small business owners, and 65 local residents living near the proposed project site.
The proposed facility will be built in Tanjung Karang Permai, Sekarbela District, and forms part of PLN EPI’s strategy to strengthen electricity supply by replacing fuel oil with liquefied natural gas (LNG), which offers lower emissions, greater efficiency, and lower operating costs.
Mataram City Assistant for Government Affairs H. Lalu Martawang said the public consultation provides an opportunity for residents to express their expectations and concerns so that social and environmental considerations are fully incorporated into the AMDAL document. Village Head Nani Nurkomala added that all public feedback would be formally recorded as part of the environmental assessment process.
Officials from the West Nusa Tenggara Environmental and Forestry Agency, the Mataram Environmental Agency, and the Provincial Energy and Mineral Resources Agency emphasized that strategic infrastructure projects must balance energy development with environmental protection and community interests.
PLN EPI Corporate Secretary Mamit Setiawan said the LNG regasification facility is designed to improve energy security, reduce dependence on fuel oil, lower electricity generation costs, and support Indonesia’s national energy transition, particularly in the Nusa Tenggara region.
He added that the project reflects PLN EPI’s commitment to delivering cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy while ensuring that development is carried out transparently through active stakeholder engagement. According to him, community trust and participation are essential to the project’s long-term success.
During the discussion session, residents raised issues related to protecting fishermen’s livelihoods, supporting local businesses, prioritizing local employment, managing coastal areas and drainage systems, and safeguarding the surrounding environment. PLN EPI stated that all recommendations will be incorporated into the AMDAL preparation and project planning process.
The company said the consultation demonstrates its commitment to implementing Good Environmental Governance, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while developing infrastructure that strengthens Indonesia’s energy resilience and accelerates the transition to cleaner energy.
