Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto summoned Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, after a limited cabinet meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, September 15, 2025. The meeting focused on accelerating the national energy transition program through the development of renewable energy, particularly solar power.
“We plan to build solar panels with a capacity of 1 to 1.5 gigawatts per village. Moving forward, we aim to build approximately 80 to 100 gigawatts. That was the technical aspect we discussed earlier,” Bahlil explained in a press briefing.
The Minister stated that the government is opening opportunities for foreign investors to participate in the acceleration program. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to encourage close collaboration between domestic entrepreneurs, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and international partners.
“Since achieving 100 gigawatts of solar panels is a major undertaking, and our current industrial capacity does not exceed 5 gigawatts per year, we will inevitably seek foreign investors who can collaborate with our local entrepreneurs and SOEs, including PLN,” Bahlil said.
In addition to the energy transition issue, ongoing negotiations with Freeport were also discussed during the meeting. The Minister revealed that while an initial agreement had been made for a 10 percent increase in shares, there is potential for a higher allocation.
“Initially, we agreed on a 10 percent share increase in Freeport, but the negotiations have developed, and God willing, it could be more than that. I was instructed to expedite the communication process, and if finalized, Freeport will likely consider extending its contract,” he concluded. (*)
