Super Typhoon Uwan Hits Aurora, Northern Luzon

Enviro News Asia, Manila — Super Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-wong) made landfall in the province of Aurora on Sunday night, bringing torrential rains and violent winds across large parts of Luzon.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Uwan made landfall in the coastal town of Dinalungan, Aurora, at 9:10 p.m.

In its 8 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA reported that Uwan packed maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts reaching up to 230 kph, classifying it as a Super Typhoon.

High Wind Signals Across Luzon

PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 over the southern portion of Quirino (Nagtipunan), the southeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya (Alfonso Castañeda, Dupax del Norte, Dupax del Sur), the northeastern portion of Nueva Ecija (Bongabon, Carranglan, Pantabangan), and the northern and central portions of Aurora (San Luis, Baler, Maria Aurora, Dipaculao, Dinalungan, Casiguran).

Signal No. 4 is in effect over parts of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Quezon, and the Polillo Islands.

Signal No. 3 covers portions of Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, and the rest of the Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions, including Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon, Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes.

Lower signals (TCWS No. 1 and 2) have also been raised over other parts of Luzon and the Visayas, including the Babuyan Islands, Mindoro provinces, Bicol region, Samar provinces, Leyte, Cebu, Negros, and northern Palawan.

Path and Expected Impact

Following its landfall, PAGASA said Uwan is expected to cross the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon and may re-emerge over Lingayen Gulf or the coastal waters of Pangasinan or La Union by Monday morning.

Although its strength will gradually diminish due to land interaction, Uwan is forecast to remain a typhoon throughout its passage over northern Luzon.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain indoors, monitor official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone and landslide-risk zones. Local governments have begun preemptive evacuations and activated disaster response teams across several regions.

Nationwide Preparedness

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has placed emergency response units on high alert. Local government units in Central Luzon and Northern Luzon have readied evacuation centers, relief supplies, and rescue equipment in anticipation of widespread flooding and power outages.

Classes and work in affected areas are suspended, while sea travel across eastern and northern seaboards has been temporarily prohibited due to high waves and strong winds.

Super Typhoon Uwan is the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines this year, marking another severe weather event amid the ongoing northeast monsoon season.
