Suralaya Power Plant Maintained as the Backbone of Clean Energy

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) accompanied Commission XII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) during an oversight visit to the Suralaya Coal-Fired Power Plant (CFPP) in Banten Province on Thursday (September 11, 2025). The visit aimed to monitor environmental management practices and community empowerment programs around the facility.

Putri Zulhas, Deputy Chair of Commission XII and head of the delegation, underscored the role of Suralaya CFPP as a critical backbone of Indonesia’s energy security. She stressed the importance of ensuring that its operations are accompanied by sustainable and environmentally sound practices to keep the surrounding ecosystem clean, healthy, and green.

Putri highlighted that Suralaya CFPP, Southeast Asia’s largest coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 6,000 MW, currently supplies more than 20% of the electricity needs in Java and Bali. She emphasized that corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSR/ESR) programs must deliver tangible benefits to local communities.

“We want to ensure that the communities living around Suralaya also gain meaningful benefits, without suffering from adverse health or environmental impacts,” Putri said. She also praised the plant’s adoption of biomass cofiring technology, which gradually reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Echoing the view, Commission XII member Rokhmat Ardiyan reaffirmed the importance of enhancing safety, security, and environmental management. According to him, Suralaya’s current management ensures that both air and water quality are well maintained.

Also present was Ida Nuryatin Finahari, Secretary of the Directorate General of Electricity at MEMR, who noted that Suralaya’s operations remain stable, with the plant’s daily operational performance recorded as secure and well-managed. (*)
