Commemorating Earth Day, Telkom Indonesia Organizes a Series of Environmental Conservation Activities

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – To commemorate Earth Day on April 22, PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) launched simultaneous environmental conservation programs at four locations across Indonesia. The activities included mangrove planting, coral reef rehabilitation, planting of MPTS (Multi-Purpose Tree Species), and seagrass preservation—carried out in collaboration with various local community groups.

According to an official statement, coral reef rehabilitation took place in Ujung Kulon National Park, Banten, on April 21, 2025, in partnership with the local community group Paniis Lestari. The coral reef transplantation aimed to restore the marine ecosystem and is expected to help boost local fishery resources. A total of 900 coral colonies were planted using the spider rack method—metal structures shaped like spiders or branched hexagons, designed as media to attach coral fragments.

At the same time, in the protected forest of Bissoloro Village, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, Telkom engaged the local community in planting 3,450 tree saplings, including non-productive trees like pine and mahogany, as well as MPTS. MPTS trees offer a range of ecological and economic benefits. The planted MPTS varieties included Musang King durian, mangosteen, avocado, crystal guava, matoa, and breadfruit. In addition to promoting environmental sustainability, the tree planting initiative aims to open new ecotourism opportunities in Gowa, such as fruit-picking activities in the protected forest area.

On the same day, Telkom also carried out seagrass conservation in the waters of Lembung Paseser, Bangkalan Regency, Madura Island. Seagrass is a flowering plant that grows in shallow marine environments, especially in calm and clear coastal waters. Often found alongside mangroves and coral reefs, seagrass forms an interconnected coastal ecosystem vital to marine sustainability. Seagrass ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting fish populations and offer potential economic benefits to local communities. In collaboration with a local youth group, 192 seagrass seedlings were planted using the TERFs method, a transplantation technique involving specially-shaped metal frames anchored underwater.

Continuing the Earth Day celebrations, on April 23, 2025, and in support of Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target, Telkom conducted a mangrove restoration project in the coastal area of Laikang Village, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi. In partnership with the local youth organization Green Youth Celebes, Telkom planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings. This effort aims to mitigate coastal abrasion, protect biodiversity, and strengthen coastal resilience against climate change.

Hery Susanto, Senior General Manager of Social Responsibility at Telkom, stated, “As Indonesia’s leading digital telco company, Telkom understands that sustainable business growth must go hand in hand with environmental preservation.”

In light of Earth Day, Telkom Indonesia implemented various conservation programs as part of its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL). This initiative reflects Telkom’s strong commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles and represents a concrete contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Telkom continues to innovate not only in technology but also in social and environmental contributions for a greener, more sustainable Indonesia.

These initiatives are not just corporate social responsibility efforts but also an active contribution to accelerating the achievement of the SDGs, particularly in environmental aspects. Through the implementation of conservation programs, Telkom reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development while commemorating Earth Day with real, impactful actions. Moving forward, Telkom will continue to integrate sustainability values into its business strategies to deliver added value to society, the environment, and the nation as a whole.
