Enviro News Asia, New York – Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to becoming a green investment hub and a leader in global climate action. Speaking at a high-level panel discussion during Climate Week NYC 2025, Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo stated that Indonesia is ready to transform the challenges of climate change into opportunities for sustainable development.
“Climate change for Indonesia is not a future threat, but a daily reality. Leadership means having the courage to confront it head-on,” Hashim emphasized in his statement on Tuesday (Sept 23, 2025).
Hashim highlighted the significant risks facing Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 285 million people living in disaster-prone areas, including rising sea levels, extreme rainfall, and forest fires.
As a strategic step, Indonesia is targeting net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, through a green economy approach that promotes growth, creates jobs, and reduces emissions. The energy transition, he noted, will be gradual, fair, and measured, including a reduction in coal use.
Through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), Indonesia is mobilizing international support to accelerate renewable energy development and strengthen its national power grid. At the same time, the government has prepared a 12-million-hectare reforestation program using multi-species planting, including fruit trees, to restore biodiversity and wildlife habitats.
Hashim also announced other key initiatives, such as the establishment of a national carbon exchange, the electrification of 103 gigawatts of capacity—75% of which will be renewable energy-based—the development of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, and blue carbon solutions through the use of seaweed ecosystems.
“Indonesia is ready to lead, ready to collaborate, and ready to invest in climate solutions. For us, climate action is not just an obligation but a golden opportunity to create national prosperity and make a tangible contribution to the world,” Hashim concluded. (*)
