Uganda Reviews Draft Masterplans for Green Industrial Parks in Lugazi and Tororo

Enviro News Asia, Kampala — Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority, in partnership with Global Green Growth Institute, convened the Second Steering Committee Meeting to review draft masterplans for proposed green industrial park sites in Lugazi and Tororo. The meeting forms part of a DANIDA co-funded initiative implemented through TradeMark Africa and GGGI to strengthen Uganda’s capacity to establish export free zones aligned with global green trade standards.

The session brought together more than 30 stakeholders from government institutions, private sector representatives, and development partners to assess project progress and refine the proposed plans. Discussions focused on integrating climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth into Uganda’s industrial development framework.

Rebecca Nalumu Wamono, Senior Manager Operations and Compliance at UFZEPA and Chairperson of the Steering Committee, emphasized that special economic zones serve as strategic instruments to attract export-oriented investment and strengthen value chains, while underscoring the importance of ensuring sustainability to protect natural resources for future generations.

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s long-term development strategies, including Uganda Vision 2040 and the Fourth National Development Plan, which position industrialization as a key driver of economic transformation. The project aims to demonstrate how green industrial development can enhance environmental integrity, improve resource efficiency, and create employment opportunities.

Pablo Martinez, Country Representative of GGGI, highlighted the importance of embedding sustainability into industrial planning, noting that green industrial parks can support economic growth while reducing pollution and strengthening climate resilience.

Participants agreed to approve the draft masterplans, subject to the incorporation of stakeholder inputs and technical revisions, paving the way for the next phase of implementation. Upcoming activities will focus on investment mobilization, stakeholder engagement, and advancing Uganda’s green industrialization agenda. (*)
