Enviro News Asia, Beijing – China on Thursday upgraded its emergency response for flood and typhoon control from Level IV to Level III as Super Typhoon Bavi intensified and tracked toward Taiwan and the Chinese mainland coast.
As of 2 p.m. Thursday, the center of Super Typhoon Bavi was located over waters approximately 1,030 kilometers southeast of Keelung, Taiwan, meteorological authorities said. The typhoon is expected to make landfall on or brush past the northern coast of Taiwan during the daytime on Saturday, before making landfall along the coast between Fuqing in Fujian Province and Wenling in Zhejiang Province on Saturday night, potentially as a super typhoon or severe typhoon.
China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said it will continue to adjust the emergency response in line with the typhoon’s development.
Typhoon Bavi, one of the strongest storms recorded this year, earlier battered the US Pacific island of Rota on Monday, prompting authorities to report extensive damage before the system continued its westward track toward East Asia. (*)
