A Lasting Legacy from Banyumas: A Story of Leadership, Steadfastness, and Stewardship of the Eart

By Dr. Ir. Soewarso Martomihardjo, M.Si., IPU

A Childhood That Forged Resilience

In a Banyumas village encircled by rivers, mornings always arrived like a prayer—simple, clear, and full of hope. It was there that young Soewarso grew up, living in harmony with the natural rhythm of life. Dirt roads, bamboo bridges, and the fresh rural air bore witness to his earliest struggles: a ten-kilometer journey to school undertaken on an old bicycle, carrying him through mist, dust, and rain.
While many children learn perseverance from books, Soewarso learned it directly from life’s terrain—from slippery paths that demanded caution, from creaking bamboo bridges, and from a village where people worked selflessly. Mutual cooperation was not a concept; it was the pulse of daily life.
At the time, he did not yet realize that the long distances, fatigue, and solitary mornings would one day become the foundation of his leadership. Nature, however, had already taught him that strong roots grow from hard soil.

Pursuing Knowledge, Discovering Purpose: Education as a Gateway to Awareness

When high school took him to Cilacap, he began living independently in a small rented room. There he learned responsibility—how one must organize one’s own life and choose discipline when others choose convenience.
In 1979, he was admitted to Institut Pertanian Bogor through the Perintis 1 track, one of the most prestigious admission pathways. At the Faculty of Forestry, he found the “language of nature” he had long felt intuitively. At the Sylvasari Dormitory, he encountered hundreds of stories from across the archipelago and learned that knowledge flourishes when the mind is open and the heart is willing to learn from anyone.
He later earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in the Program on Natural Resources and Environmental Management—choices that affirmed his calling. For Soewarso, education was not merely a formal credential, but a path to inner clarity: a means to ensure that knowledge serves to sustain life rather than destroy it.
He once remarked, “IPB students are trained to endure, to respond to challenges, and to unite integrity with conscience.” The statement reflected not only the ethos of the campus, but also the arc of his own life.

At the Heart of the Jungle: A Career that Cultivated Sensitivity

After graduating, he entered a field few chose: the forest. From 1984 to 1994, he worked in natural forest concessions in Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra.
Beneath the canopy of tropical rainforests, he came to see forests not as timber industries, but as living ecosystems—homes to millions of beings and sources of livelihood for local communities.
He witnessed how villages depended on forests, how policy decisions shaped daily life, and how the boundary between economic necessity and environmental preservation was rarely simple. From this experience emerged a deeper academic awareness: that forest management is an intersection of ecology, economy, and ethics.

Leadership Forged Early: Director of Industrial Plantations at 35

At the age of 35, Soewarso was entrusted with leading PT SBA Wood Industries as Director of Industrial Forest Plantations (HTI). At this stage, life was no longer solely about technical expertise, but about clarity—knowing when to be firm and when to listen.
He led hundreds of employees, balancing production demands with sustainability and community empowerment. In this role, he learned that leadership is not defined by titles, but by the courage to change what must be changed and the resolve to safeguard what must not be compromised.

Two Decades of Stewardship: APP Group and the Path of Sustainability

The year 2000 marked a new chapter. As a Director at APP Group, he stood at the forefront of promoting sustainable forestry practices. He integrated supply chains, strengthened governance, built partnerships with communities, and ensured that forests were treated not as commodities, but as ecological legacies.
In this phase, his academic depth converged with practical responsibility. He wove together knowledge, field experience, and leadership into a single, enduring thread called sustainability.

National Collaboration: Uniting Interests, Preserving Integrity

His roles in various organizations—APHI, the Dewan Kehutanan Nasional, KADIN, APINDO, and HGI—led him to one clear understanding: Indonesia’s forestry sector does not belong to a single stakeholder. It is a meeting ground for government, business, communities, and academia, and a true leader must bridge them all.
He is known as a forward-looking thinker who guided APHI toward greater inclusivity and integrity, aligned with the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target. In every forum, he delivered a simple message: “Forestry is about the dignity of a nation.”

From Banyumas to Belém: Environmental Diplomacy on the Global Stage

Beginning in 2016, his steps extended into global forums. He participated in the United Nations Forum on Forests, attended COP UNFCCC meetings from Morocco to Brazil, and served as an Indonesian delegate in international discussions on carbon credits in London.
When speaking about Indonesia on the world stage, he brought more than data. He carried with him memories of village life, social sensitivity shaped in the forests of Sumatra, and academic reflection on sustainability. Each address blended knowledge, integrity, and sincerity.
In every such moment, he demonstrated that a voice from a small village can resonate in United Nations halls when delivered with genuine commitment.

A Constant Source of Peace: Family and Values

Despite the breadth of his professional horizon, Soewarso remains a warm and devoted family man. With his children, grandchildren, and extended family, he finds an inexhaustible source of strength. Togetherness, for him, is a ritual of the soul—a wellspring of inner peace and resilience.
The three principles he holds dear—spirituality, integrity, and usefulness—anchor every decision. He believes true success is possible only when one is close to God, honest with oneself, and beneficial to others.

Serving the Alma Mater: Recognition and Hope

In 2025, he was named one of the Top 100 Prominent Alumni of IPB, an honor affirming his contributions and integrity. Yet for Soewarso, recognition was never the goal; it served merely as a reminder that a long life’s journey can illuminate the path for future generations.
He hopes that IPB will continue to stand as a center of excellence and humanity, and that its alumni will preserve cross-generational solidarity—uniting as a force to lead Indonesia toward a future that is green, peaceful, and just.

Closing: A Story of Perseverance that Becomes Light

The life of Soewarso Martomihardjo attests that great journeys often begin in quiet places—from bamboo bridges, dirt roads, and small choices pursued with unwavering resolve.
From modest Banyumas to global climate forums, from the voice of the forest to international diplomacy, he has walked with principles that never fade: that trust must be honored, integrity must be upheld, and the Earth must be protected for generations yet unborn.
This is the story of a village son who chose to become a guardian of forests, values, and hope—a journey proving that when the heart aligns with intention, every step will find its way.
