Enviro News Asia, Honiara — The Chevening Alumni of Solomon Islands hosted a two-day symposium focused on leadership and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), bringing together key stakeholders to evaluate national progress and strengthen collaboration.
The event, held from April 16 to 17 in Honiara, marked a decade since United Nations SDGs were adopted by the Solomon Islands in 2015.
The symposium, themed “Leadership, Accountability and Sustainable Nation Building,” gathered more than 30 participants from government institutions, private sector organizations, civil society, and Chevening alumni networks.
Supported by the British High Commission through the Chevening Alumni Programme Fund, the forum aimed to bridge the gap between policy commitments and practical implementation at the community level.
Speaking on behalf of the British High Commission, Ian Gorman emphasized the importance of alumni engagement in national development.
“The United Kingdom encourages Chevening alumni to act as lifelong leaders who contribute meaningfully to their communities,” he said.
The program featured updates from the Ministry of National Planning and Aid Coordination, along with panel discussions on key development areas, including climate and environment, water and sanitation, education, economic growth, and sustainable communities.
A central focus of the symposium was the role of middle management leaders in driving development outcomes, as well as fostering stronger institutional collaboration.
The event also underscored commitments to Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), ensuring inclusive participation in national development efforts.
The symposium is expected to produce recommendations to support SDG implementation while strengthening partnerships among stakeholders across the Solomon Islands. (*)
