Enviro News Asia, Belem — Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang announced that China will accelerate a comprehensive green transition in its economic and social sectors while advancing efforts to reach peak carbon emissions in a steady and balanced manner.
Speaking as President Xi Jinping’s special representative at the Belem Climate Summit in Brazil on Thursday, Ding conveyed Xi’s best wishes for the success of the event and commended Brazil’s leadership in global climate governance as host of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
Marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, Ding highlighted China’s achievements in fulfilling its 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He noted that President Xi had announced the country’s 2035 NDC targets at the UN Climate Summit, covering all sectors and greenhouse gases and introducing an absolute emissions reduction target for the first time — a reflection of China’s firm determination to combat climate change.
Ding said that the recently adopted Recommendations of the CPC Central Committee for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development outline key strategies for building a “Beautiful China.” The plan calls for coordinated progress in carbon reduction, pollution control, green expansion, and sustainable growth, with carbon neutrality serving as the driving force.
Emphasizing that “China honors its commitments through concrete actions,” Ding reaffirmed that the country will make greater contributions to global climate solutions. He also presented a three-point proposal to strengthen global climate governance: maintaining the right course toward coordinated economic and environmental goals; implementing the Paris Agreement under the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities; and deepening international cooperation in green technology, trade, and sustainable development.
During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the summit, Ding reiterated China’s commitment to true multilateralism and to supporting the UN’s central role in global governance. He emphasized China’s readiness to promote dialogue and cooperation to advance world peace, development, and environmental protection.
Guterres thanked China for its longstanding support for the UN’s work, describing the country as a “key leader in global climate governance and an important pillar of world peace and multilateralism.” He also praised President Xi’s Global Governance Initiative as a valuable contribution to reforming and improving the global governance system.
Later in the day, Ding attended a luncheon hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the “Tropical Forests Forever Facility” fund, where he highlighted China’s achievements in ecological protection and sustainable development in tropical rainforest regions. Ding reaffirmed that China is ready to strengthen cooperation with all countries in protecting tropical rainforests and contributing further to global environmental governance. (*)
