Enviro News Asia, Serang — The Ministry of Environment and Forestry / Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) has sealed two metal smelting factories in Serang Regency, Banten, after confirming their contribution to air pollution.
This decisive action was led directly by Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq during a late-night surprise inspection on Wednesday (June 11, 2025).
“The blue skies of Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) must become the new standard, not an exception,” stated Minister Hanif as he installed warning signs and enforcement seals at the industrial sites.
The two companies sealed are:
- PT Jaya Abadi Steel (formerly Shiva Shakti Steel) in Ciruas, Serang — an iron smelter with an annual capacity of 150,000 tons, found to be emitting thick smoke without adequate pollution control.
- PT Luckione Environment Science Indonesia, located in the Modern Cikande Industrial Zone — previously recommended for legal action in 2023, but again found violating air quality standards via drone surveillance on June 4, 2025.
According to Minister Hanif, conducting inspections at night reflects the government’s seriousness in ensuring that industrial activities comply with environmental regulations.
“We show up when industries are operational to ensure there is no room for compromise. This is about the public’s right to clean air,” he asserted.
In addition to the sealing action, the KLH/BPLH team collected air and waste samples for forensic analysis.
Illegal disposal of hazardous waste (B3) was also suspected at the site.
Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement, Police Commissioner General Rizal Irawan, stated that the case presents strong criminal elements and is currently under legal process.
“This is not merely an administrative violation—it is a serious offense with consequences for public health and the environment. We will pursue legal enforcement without compromise,” Rizal emphasized.
This enforcement action is part of KLH/BPLH’s integrated monitoring roadmap, which will target strategic industrial areas in Bekasi, Karawang, Tangerang, and other regions. Minister Hanif stressed that this sealing is not the end, but the beginning of systematic supervision.
“Industries must transition to low-emission technologies. The government will act as the enforcer, the public as the watchdog, and the media as the voice of truth,” Hanif concluded. (*)
