Environment Ministry Deploys Heavy Equipment and Waste-Management Support to Accelerate Flood Recovery in Sumatra

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) has mobilized large-scale technical and logistical support to accelerate post-flood recovery efforts in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra. The assistance, delivered beginning last week, focuses on disaster waste management, restoration of public services and environmental governance improvements to reduce health risks and support local economic recovery.

KLH/BPLH deployed three dump trucks—including two additional units for priority districts—along with a pickup vehicle, three Black Soldier Fly (BSF) processing units, one Specific Waste Management Facility (FPSS) for household e-waste, three excavators, six chainsaws, and humanitarian packages containing food supplies, sanitation kits, clothing and medicines. Field updates have been submitted to President Prabowo Subianto.

Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH Hanif Faisol Nurofiq expressed condolences to affected communities and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to environmental recovery and coordinated disaster response. He stated that the support strengthens environmental governance, particularly in waste management and post-disaster cleanup operations.

As part of its technical guidance, KLH/BPLH issued directives on managing post-disaster waste—including wood debris and natural materials—so they may be treated as specific waste where permitted by regulation. The instructions aim to accelerate environmental rehabilitation, reduce waste volumes sent to final disposal sites and enable reuse of salvageable materials.

The ministry confirmed readiness to increase heavy-equipment deployment based on field requirements and inter-ministerial approvals. Minister Hanif said three units are currently in operation and additional equipment will be mobilized upon recommendation from the national emergency response team.

KLH/BPLH has also advanced law-enforcement measures related to the disaster. The ministry summoned eight concession-holding entities in North Sumatra as part of an expedited investigation. Four entities underwent examination today, and the remaining four are scheduled for questioning tomorrow. Minister Hanif emphasized that legal proceedings are progressing in parallel with technical assistance and humanitarian outreach.

He added that two dump trucks have been dispatched specifically to Agam (West Sumatra) and Aceh as part of ongoing recovery support, and confirmed that disaster-response activities have been underway since last week with continuous reporting to the President.

National waste-management data for November recorded a 24 percent handling rate. KLH/BPLH projects further improvement in December as more districts close open dumping sites and adopt better waste-management practices. Strengthened monitoring, environmental law enforcement and multi-stakeholder coordination remain long-term priorities to mitigate environmental degradation and reduce future disaster risks.

The ministry reiterated full alignment with presidential directives on emergency response and recovery, ensuring all technical and logistical assistance remains adaptable to evolving field conditions through coordination with ministries and regional governments. (*)
