Forestry Ministry Opens Performance-Based REDD+ Financing Opportunities for Regions

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry has opened opportunities for regional governments to access performance-based REDD+ financing, underscoring the critical role of subnational forest governance in achieving national climate targets.

The statement was delivered by Raja Juli Antoni, Minister of Forestry, during an online coordination meeting on jurisdictional REDD+ implementation held on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by governors or their representatives and forestry agency heads from Central Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara, Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, Central Papua, Highland Papua, South Papua, and North Maluku.

The Minister commended regional leaders for their commitment to forest and environmental protection, describing it as a key foundation for Indonesia’s response to global climate change. He emphasized that the forestry sector plays a decisive role in meeting Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Raja Juli Antoni stated that the implementation of REDD+ and Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 commitment are essential instruments for achieving national emissions reduction targets. According to him, the success of national climate action is largely determined by forest management performance at the regional level, making strong coordination between central and local governments a critical requirement.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Forestry also presented financing opportunities through the ART-TREES mechanism, which applies a jurisdictional, performance-based approach while upholding environmental integrity and international accountability. The scheme is expected to support the acceleration of FOLU Net Sink 2030, strengthen forestry-sector NDC implementation, and improve forest governance.

The Ministry encouraged regional governments to continue enhancing forest protection efforts, reducing deforestation and forest degradation, strengthening data and monitoring systems, and ensuring the fair and sustainable involvement of indigenous peoples and local communities in forest management.
