Enviro News Asia, Sudan — The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has announced its commitment to mobilise at least USD 100 million to support climate action in Chad, subject to approval by the GCF Board.
The funding commitment forms part of an accelerated programme of action aligned with Chad’s national climate priorities. Mobilised finance will support climate adaptation efforts, including climate-resilient agriculture to reduce food insecurity and measures to strengthen rural resilience, while also addressing pressures arising from hosting refugee populations.
The investment pipeline includes the submission of Chad’s first-ever single-country project to the GCF Board for consideration at its upcoming meeting. In addition, GCF will provide further institutional and technical support through its Readiness Programme to strengthen climate planning coordination and enhance the country’s capacity to implement climate projects effectively.
The announcement followed a high-level mission to Chad led by GCF Executive Director Mafalda Duarte, accompanied by GCF Board Co-Chair Ambassador Seyni Nafo. During the visit, the delegation held a series of meetings with senior government officials.
A joint communiqué and declaration were issued by Chad’s Minister of the Environment, Fishery and Sustainable Development, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, and Mafalda Duarte. The declaration outlined commitments to advance the accreditation application of the Ministry of Finance, Budget, Economy and International Cooperation as a GCF Accredited Entity, and to establish a multi-year partnership framework.
Mafalda Duarte said GCF remains committed to supporting Chad’s response to climate change, noting that the country ranks among the most climate-vulnerable globally. She emphasized that the proposed investment pipeline would deliver urgently needed climate finance while accelerating institutional readiness.
Chad faces escalating climate risks, including droughts, flooding, and desertification, which have contributed to severe food insecurity. The country is also hosting large numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons, including more than one million refugees and returnees from Sudan since the outbreak of conflict there in 2023.
The mission took place ahead of the upcoming African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, where GCF is set to highlight its climate finance support for Africa, with a particular focus on water resilience. (*)
