Indonesia and Japan Expand Cooperation in the Green Industry Sector

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Indonesia and Japan have agreed to expand cooperation in the green industry sector. As part of its support for Indonesia’s agenda on mineral downstream processing and increasing the use of Renewable Energy (EBT), Japan is implementing the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) agenda in projects within Indonesia’s potential industrial sectors.

“With the continuation of industrial cooperation projects between Indonesia and Japan under the AZEC framework and the principles of a green economy, we hope that Indonesia-Japan relations can become more comprehensive,” said Matsuo Takehiko, Japan’s Vice Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), in Jakarta. He made this statement during the 3rd Indonesia-Japan Public-Private Dialogue Track (PPDT) 1.5 meeting on Friday (28/02).

The Indonesian delegation was led by Edi Prio Pambudi, Deputy for Coordination of Economic Cooperation and Investment at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, while the Japanese delegation was headed by Matsuo Takehiko from METI. The private sectors of both countries were also involved, engaging in discussions on expanding cooperation and improving the business environment in Indonesia, particularly in digital economy and start-ups, the green industry, and workforce capacity development.

During the meeting, Indonesia and Japan exchanged perspectives and reaffirmed their commitment to the AZEC policy and the “Action Plan for the Next Decade.” Japanese private sector participants presented demonstration projects as initiatives for industrial area decarbonization and shared their vision, contributing to Indonesia’s net-zero emissions target. Meanwhile, Indonesian private sector representatives shared their policies and projects on critical mineral downstreaming to support the renewable energy industry.

According to Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, both parties welcomed the progress of Japanese and Indonesian private sector projects and reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable cooperation for concrete projects under AZEC.

In the digital economy and start-up discussion session, Deputy Edi emphasized that expanding collaboration between Indonesia and Japan is key to enhancing the strengths of both countries in the economic sector, particularly through the Fast Pitch Track program between Japan and Indonesia.

Representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry were also part of the Indonesian delegation.
