Indonesia Halts Emission Sources at Eight Firms in Greater Jakarta over Air Quality Violations

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency has ordered the immediate shutdown of emission sources at eight major companies in the Greater Jakarta area after they were found to have violated national air quality standards.

The enforcement action was announced in Jakarta on 22 January 2026 as part of an intensified campaign to curb industrial air pollution. The move followed a direct instruction from Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, to strengthen supervision and apply uncompromising law enforcement against serious air pollution offences.

The ministry’s Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control stated that the operation reflected the government’s firm stance to ensure industrial activities do not endanger public health. He said industrial emission patrols must be conducted intensively and followed by strict legal action in cases of severe violations.

Between 16 and 22 January 2026, the ministry deployed 17 environmental inspection teams to monitor 40 strategic industrial zones across Jakarta, Bekasi, and Karawang. Field inspections identified visible black smoke emissions from industrial chimneys and illegal open burning of waste, both of which breach prevailing environmental regulations.

As a result, the ministry imposed forced shutdowns on emission sources, including boilers, furnaces, and spray dryers, at eight companies operating in industrial estates across Bekasi, North Jakarta, East Jakarta, Tangerang, and Cikarang. The shutdowns were carried out immediately as a warning to other industrial operators.

The deputy stressed that the government would not tolerate businesses that prioritise profit at the expense of public health. He warned that repeated non-compliance could lead to the revocation of environmental permits and potential criminal prosecution.

The Ministry of Environment confirmed that industrial emission patrols will continue across 48 industrial zones and other designated industrial areas in the Greater Jakarta region, as well as in other parts of the country. While the government allows companies the opportunity to make corrective improvements, enforcement measures will be escalated against repeated violations through coordination with regional governments and relevant law enforcement agencies.

The directive issued by the minister serves as a strong signal for all industrial operators to take full responsibility for the environmental impacts of their activities in order to protect air quality and public health. (*)
