Indonesia Reaffirms Global Leadership in Peatland Governance at COP30 Climate Action Workshop

Enviro News Asia, Belem — Indonesia reiterated its strong commitment to advancing nature-based climate solutions through active participation in the Workshop “Peatlands & Nature-based Climate Action,” held on 20 November 2025 at the German Pavilion, Blue Zone, COP30 UNFCCC. The session, opened by Germany’s Federal Minister for Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, brought together experts and policymakers from Indonesia, Germany, Uganda, and Brazil.

Representing the Ministry of Forestry, Senior Advisor for Climate Change, Prof. Haruni Krisnawati, presented Indonesia’s progress and strategic approach to peatland management as part of its national climate targets. She highlighted several critical success factors that have strengthened Indonesia’s peatland governance over the past decade.

These include strong political commitment—evident through the establishment of the Peatland and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM)—and reinforcing both national and subnational regulatory frameworks. She emphasized the importance of coordinated cross-sectoral and cross-administrative planning, given that peat landscapes cut across jurisdictional boundaries. Prof. Haruni also underlined the pivotal role of community participation, which ensures that restoration efforts are not only ecologically effective but also deliver economic benefits at the local level.

Another key pillar is sustainable long-term financing. With more than 20 million hectares of peatland ecosystems, Indonesia requires consistent investment to support restoration efforts and mitigate environmental risks.

Prof. Haruni also explained that since the institutional restructuring separating the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forestry, the latter now holds an increasingly critical mandate in national peatland governance. More than 70 percent of Indonesia’s peatlands lie within forest areas, making the Ministry of Forestry the central authority responsible for their protection, rehabilitation, and sustainable use.

Indonesia’s participation in the workshop underscores its leadership in the global effort to protect peatlands—one of the world’s most significant natural carbon sinks—and its commitment to contributing meaningful climate solutions. The Ministry of Forestry continues to encourage international cooperation to safeguard peat ecosystems and strengthen their role in addressing the global climate crisis.(*)
