Indonesia’s Ambassador Visits Boeing, Encourages Aircraft Component Production and Advanced Aviation Technology Cooperation

Enviro News Asia, Seattle – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington, D.C. conducted a working visit to the Boeing facility in Renton, Seattle. During the visit, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, met and engaged in discussions with Boeing’s executive leadership, Indonesian diaspora professionals working at the company, and conducted a site visit to the Boeing B737 Max manufacturing facility. The visit focused on strengthening opportunities for cooperation between Indonesia and Boeing across various aviation industry sectors, as well as expanding networks with the Indonesian diaspora at Boeing.

Boeing is one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers, based in the United States, and has maintained a long-standing historical relationship with Indonesia. Boeing–Indonesia cooperation began in 1949 when Garuda Indonesia commenced operations with a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. Indonesia’s first Douglas DC-3 aircraft—RI-001 Seulawah—was purchased through donations from the people of Aceh in 1948. Since then, for 76 years, Boeing and Indonesia have continued to partner in supporting the development of the aviation sector.

In its meeting with Ambassador Indroyono, Boeing emphasized Indonesia’s tremendous potential for growth in the aviation sector. As an archipelagic country, air transportation is essential for connecting thousands of islands from Sabang to Merauke, positioning Indonesia as one of the most strategic markets in the region.

Boeing also highlighted the importance of accelerating Indonesia’s national fleet renewal program. Indonesia currently has the largest number of aircraft in Southeast Asia, yet simultaneously operates one of the oldest fleets in the region. Boeing reported that 474 Boeing aircraft are operating in Indonesia, but only about 7 percent fall under the new-generation category. With rapid growth in air mobility, Southeast Asia—including Indonesia—has become one of the world’s largest and most dynamic aviation markets.

Ambassador Indroyono underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with the United States to enhance Indonesia’s air connectivity. He expressed hope that more Boeing aircraft components could be manufactured in Indonesia, aligning with President Prabowo’s downstream industrialization policy. “The Government is ready to support Indonesia’s increased role in Boeing’s aircraft production supply chain,” stated Ambassador Indroyono. Boeing welcomed this statement and noted that several Indonesian companies have already been categorized as Tier-One Suppliers.

The visit also discussed opportunities for developing aviation technology, including improving human resource capacity, strengthening research, and collaborating on the development of sustainable aviation fuel (biofuel/SAF). Boeing and stakeholders in Indonesia are considered to have significant potential to expand strategic cooperation in this field.

Ambassador Indroyono also engaged in dialogue with Indonesian diaspora professionals who are part of the Boeing Indonesian Association (BIA). Boeing expressed appreciation for the contributions of Indonesian engineers, who are regarded as having strong competencies across various aircraft development sectors. The involvement of the diaspora in knowledge-sharing programs is seen as an added value for the advancement of Indonesia’s aviation ecosystem.

The visit concluded with an inspection of the B737 Max production facility. Boeing explained that high global demand has resulted in order wait times of 5–6 years, with a production capacity of approximately 42 units per month. The series of meetings further strengthened the commitment of both parties to opening broader cooperation opportunities and deepening the strategic relationship between Indonesia and Boeing in the aviation sector.
