Enviro News Asia, Indore – Indore, recognized as India’s cleanest city and located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Central India, will observe No Car Day on September 22, 2025. This marks the third consecutive year the city has joined the global initiative of World Car-Free Day.
From 2017 to 2023, Indore has consistently been ranked as the cleanest city in India under the national Swachh Survekshan survey. With a population of approximately 3.3 million and covering 3,898 square kilometers, Indore is also part of India’s Smart Cities Mission.
The No Car Day campaign aims to reduce vehicle emissions, ease traffic congestion, and promote eco-friendly modes of transport such as cycling, walking, and public transit. A designated car-free zone will be created from Geeta Bhawan to Palasia and back on Monday. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav has called on residents to actively participate and set an example for other cities.
“Indore is the only city in the country to mark No Car Day for three consecutive years. Let us voluntarily avoid using cars on this day. Instead, use bicycles, motorcycles, or e-bikes to make a significant difference in the city’s traffic and environmental outlook. The past two initiatives have already received national recognition. I urge everyone to join No Car Day for a cleaner Indore,” said Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav in a video message encouraging citizens to leave their cars at home on September 22.
Indore is also known as an education hub, home to prestigious institutions such as Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya and the Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore). The city has around 500,000 four-wheelers and 1.4 million two-wheelers, and boasts a growing startup ecosystem, particularly in clean technology and urban innovation. (*)
