Major Floods Hit Bali, 17 Dead and 5 Still Missing

Enviro News Asia, Denpasar — Bali, an island usually synonymous with tourism and natural beauty, is now in mourning. Torrential rains that began in the early hours of Tuesday, September 9, 2025, triggered massive floods across multiple regions. The hydrometeorological disaster first struck Tabanan Regency and within hours spread to Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Jembrana, Klungkung, Bangli, and Karangasem.

According to the latest update on Saturday (September 13) at 12:00 WITA, 356 disaster points were recorded, with 205 identified as flooding. Denpasar City experienced the worst inundation, severely disrupting social and economic activities. To date, 17 people have been confirmed dead, while 5 remain missing and are still being searched for by joint SAR teams.

At least 149 residents were forced to evacuate to several emergency shelters, including Banjar Sedana Merta Ubung, Banjar Dakdakan Peguyangan, Banjar Kesambi Kesiman, Pulau Misol Denpasar, and Banjar Tohpati Kesiman Kertalangu. Public kitchens have also been established at the Jembrana BPBD office and Pengambengan to meet the food needs of displaced residents.

The Head of Bali Province BPBD stated that his office, together with relevant agencies, has moved quickly to carry out evacuations, distribute logistical aid, and restore conditions for affected communities. “We continue to strengthen cross-sectoral coordination to ensure that emergency response efforts run effectively and responsively,” he said.

This flood serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness in facing climate change and natural disasters in a world-renowned tourist destination like Bali. The regional government has urged residents to remain vigilant, as extreme weather is forecasted to continue in the coming days. (*)
