Minister Promotes Green Policing to Strengthen Preventive Environmental Governance

Enviro News Asia, Pekanbaru — Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Moh. Jumhur Hidayat, has called for stronger cross-sector collaboration in environmental management through the Green Policing approach, describing it as a strategic model to enhance preventive measures in environmental protection.

The initiative, introduced by Riau Regional Police, emphasizes a shift from conventional law enforcement toward a more proactive and preventive framework. The Minister highlighted that Green Policing represents an important breakthrough in fostering a more responsive and integrated approach to addressing environmental challenges.

He noted that the concept goes beyond traditional enforcement roles, encouraging actions that prioritize environmental preservation and improvement. This aligns with the broader policy direction of the Ministry of Environment, which places prevention and behavioral change at the core of environmental governance.

Riau Police Chief Herry Heryawan stated that Green Policing redefines the role of law enforcement as not only regulators but also facilitators of public awareness and collaboration in environmental issues. The approach seeks to position the police as active contributors to ecological solutions and drivers of collective responsibility.

The Ministry views Green Policing as a form of collaborative leadership that integrates law enforcement with community participation, strengthening oversight and encouraging sustainable environmental practices. The initiative also supports large-scale awareness campaigns aimed at embedding environmental responsibility across all levels of society.

Looking ahead, the Ministry plans to promote the replication of the Green Policing model beyond Riau Province as part of a national strategy to enhance ecological resilience and ensure more effective, measurable, and sustainable environmental management. (*)
