Preserve Environmental Sustainability, Extreme Rain Expected Until January 9

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged the public to remain vigilant about the potential for extreme weather conditions at the beginning of the year, lasting until January 9, 2025. During such extreme weather conditions, environmental preservation becomes increasingly important. Areas with severe environmental damage are at higher risk of hydrometeorological disasters.

In a press release on Friday (January 3, 2024), BMKG highlighted that atmospheric dynamics in Indonesia at the start of 2025 exhibit varying patterns.
“Based on the latest analysis, several regions are still likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, especially in southern Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara,” BMKG stated in the press release.

BMKG explained that these conditions are influenced by the active Asian Monsoon and atmospheric wave activities such as Kelvin Waves and Equatorial Rossby Waves in several regions.

Additionally, cyclonic circulations have been observed in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the North Natuna Sea, the Sawu Sea, and the Pacific Ocean north of North Maluku. These circulations create convergence zones from the waters of Nias to Aceh, in the North Natuna Sea, in the southern waters of West Nusa Tenggara, and in the northern waters of North Maluku. They also form wind convergence areas (confluences) in northern Sumatra, from the South China Sea east of Vietnam to the Natuna Sea, and in the Pacific Ocean north of North Maluku.

The public is advised to continuously monitor the latest weather information, as hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and strong winds may still occur. Regions with well-maintained environmental conditions face a lower risk of such disasters.
