Prof. Anter Venus Appointed Chair of ADPIKI Advisory Board

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Anter Venus has been appointed Chair of the Advisory Board of the Asosiasi Dosen dan Peneliti Ilmu Komunikasi Indonesia (ADPIKI) as part of efforts to strengthen the strategic direction of the professional organization amid the rapid disruption caused by digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), and evolving communication landscapes.

The appointment of the academic, widely recognized for his contributions to digital communication and media studies, is expected to reinforce ADPIKI’s role in developing a communication ecosystem grounded in scientific knowledge, public literacy, and responsible use of digital technology in Indonesia.

In his presentation titled “Communicological Strategies in Responding to Information Overload in the Digital and AI Era,” Prof. Anter Venus highlighted how digital technology and AI have fundamentally transformed the way people produce, distribute, and consume information, creating new challenges in social life and public communication.

“The current flood of information does not automatically make society wiser or better informed. Instead, it has generated serious challenges, including misinformation, disinformation, infodemics, and digital fatigue caused by the overwhelming flow of information,” he stated.

According to him, digital algorithms are no longer merely tools for distributing information but have increasingly shaped the way society constructs social reality. This situation, he said, requires communication approaches that are more critical, adaptive, and science-based.

“Algorithms are gradually influencing how humans understand social reality. Therefore, communication should not only be viewed as message delivery, but also as an instrument for shaping social awareness and public decision-making,” he explained.

Prof. Anter Venus also noted that public consumption of information continues to increase alongside the rapid growth of internet usage, social media, and AI penetration among younger generations. He warned that these developments have made society more vulnerable to hoaxes, filter bubbles, post-truth narratives, and algorithm-driven information manipulation.

He emphasized that the academic community has a major responsibility to promote factual, credible, and science-based public communication amid growing information polarization in digital spaces. Strengthening media literacy, critical thinking, fact verification culture, AI ethics, and personal data protection, he added, are becoming increasingly essential in the modern communication era.

“Public communication must be built upon accurate, factual, and science-based information. Society also needs stronger critical thinking skills to avoid being trapped by manipulative information flows,” he said.

He further explained that many classical communication and media theories remain relevant in analyzing contemporary digital society, including agenda-setting, framing, uses and gratification, as well as social network and cyber community theories. However, modern communication challenges demand more flexible approaches because digital spaces are highly participatory, fluid, personal, and often polarized.

ADPIKI expressed hope that Prof. Anter Venus’s leadership as Chair of the Advisory Board would strengthen the organization’s contribution to the development of communication studies that are responsive to technological advancement, social transformation, and Indonesia’s growing public communication needs.
