Enviro News Asia, Cilacap – PT Pertamina (Persero), through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, is expanding the production of environmentally friendly energy at its Refinery Unit (RU) II Dumai and RU VI Balongan. Currently, RU IV Cilacap is the only refinery producing Pertamina’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using used cooking oil (UCO) as raw material.

Expansion of SAF production to other refinery units following the pioneering output at RU IV Cilacap. The SAF is produced from UCO, supporting Indonesia’s commitment to green refineries and net zero emissions.
Production currently at RU IV Cilacap, Central Java, with expansions planned at RU II Dumai and RU VI Balongan.
The SAF inaugural flight using UCO-based fuel took place on August 20, 2025, following the first production in July 2025. The announcement was made on August 27, 2025.
To drive Indonesia’s commitment to environmental sustainability, support the net zero emission goal by 2060, and foster an inclusive circular economy involving local communities and SMEs in UCO collection.
By utilizing a collaborative approach among Pertamina’s holding and subholding companies to innovate and scale up the production of SAF that meets international standards such as DefStan 91-091, RED EU, ISCC, and CORSIA. This includes certification throughout the entire supply chain from collection to distribution.
Didik Bahagia highlighted the significance of SAF production as a flagship product, emphasizing the synergy among Pertamina Group units in transforming used cooking oil into sustainable energy. Mochamad Iriawan stated that the Cilacap refinery acts as a pioneer in this green energy initiative, underscoring the collective effort required to meet Indonesia’s green refinery ambitions.
Furthermore, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, pointed out the double impact of Pertamina’s SAF development: boosting the local economy through community and SME participation while simultaneously reducing environmental emissions in the aviation sector.
Pertamina’s continuous efforts align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) policies across its operations. (*)
