Enviro News Asia, Chengdu — Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to accelerating research and development in fusion energy through enhanced international cooperation. He made the statement during the opening of the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group and the 30th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, on Tuesday (October 14).
Zhang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, described fusion energy as “the path to the future” for the peaceful use of nuclear technology. He emphasized China’s readiness to collaborate with other nations under four major global initiatives — the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative — to promote sustainable development and global energy security.
“Fusion energy is the key to a clean energy future. China is ready to work with all partners to advance fundamental research and achieve technological breakthroughs in this field,” Zhang stated.
He further highlighted the importance of strengthening the synergy between scientific innovation and industrial development to ensure that research outcomes can be translated into tangible global benefits.
On the sidelines of the conference, Zhang also held a bilateral meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. Both parties discussed ways to enhance strategic dialogue and explore practical cooperation opportunities, including scientist exchanges, fusion reactor technology development, and joint projects coordinated under the IAEA framework.
