Enviro News Asia, Tianjin — The Qilihai Wetland in Ninghe District, Tianjin, has reported a record 308 bird species this autumn, marking its highest count to date and an earlier-than-usual migration season, according to local conservation authorities.
An early cold snap in northern regions has caused habitats to freeze sooner, prompting migratory birds such as oriental storks, Eurasian spoonbills, and white-naped cranes to arrive earlier. The number of Eurasian spoonbills alone has reached over 3,000 — double the previous records.
Situated along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, Qilihai Wetland is a vital stopover for over 600,000 migratory birds annually. Conservation efforts, including water level management and advanced drone-based monitoring, have enhanced biodiversity and improved ecological conditions.
“We will continue to ensure safe migration through smart monitoring and ecological restoration,” said Tian Xiujing, director of the reserve’s management committee. (*)
