State Defense Day Reaffirms National Unity Commitment

Enviro News Asia, Washington, D.C. — Indonesia commemorated the 77th State Defense Day to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding national unity and sovereignty, recalling the historic struggle that ensured the Republic’s survival during the Dutch Military Aggression II in 1948.

State Defense Day marks the moment when Indonesia resisted the collapse of state authority after Dutch forces seized Yogyakarta on December 19, 1948, and detained national leaders. Despite the occupation, Indonesia continued its resistance through a nationwide guerrilla war led by Sudirman and the establishment of the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PDRI) in Bukittinggi under Syafruddin Prawiranegara.

The commemoration took place across Indonesia and at Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad, including at the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington, D.C.. In Washington, the ceremony was led by Ambassador Indroyono Soesilo and attended by Indonesian diplomats and locally engaged staff.

The ceremony included a moment of silence to honor fallen heroes, the recitation of the State Defense Pledge, and the reading of the written address of President Prabowo Subianto. In his address, the President emphasized that State Defense Day serves as a reminder that Indonesia’s progress depends on collective preparedness, discipline, and resilience.

President Prabowo highlighted that contemporary threats to national security no longer come solely in conventional forms but include cyber warfare, radicalism, and natural disasters. He stressed that the spirit of state defense must therefore become a shared responsibility of all citizens.

The President also expressed solidarity with communities in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra that are currently affected by natural disasters, calling on all Indonesians to extend support and assistance as part of the nation’s collective duty.

In his historical reflection, Ambassador Indroyono Soesilo recalled the events following the Dutch airborne assault on Yogyakarta, the violation of the Renville Agreement, and the issuance of the Guerrilla Warfare Strategy Order that mobilized nationwide resistance. He noted that the unity between the armed forces and civilians ultimately led to the General Offensive of March 1, 1949, which paved the way for international recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty in December 1949.

The annual observance of State Defense Day continues to remind Indonesians of the values of resilience, self-reliance, solidarity, and mutual cooperation that underpin the nation’s independence and unity. (*)
