Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), a Subholding of Upstream Pertamina, remains committed to supporting national independence through energy self-sufficiency.
In its effort to advance the energy self-sufficiency program, PHE continues to aggressively seek new resources, resulting in a 37% annual growth in exploration over the past three years.
PHE’s Director of Exploration, Muharram Jaya Panguriseng, stated that Pertamina is currently implementing three main strategies to boost exploration activities. The first strategy, aimed at achieving short-term targets over the next five years, is to continue optimizing exploration in existing areas.
“We remain active in existing areas because there are still opportunities there. These opportunities make us optimistic about discovering major findings, such as those in 2024, which became Pertamina’s largest discoveries in the past 15 years,” said Muharram during a talk show on the Oil and Gas Industry Transformation: Efficiency and New Exploration in Jakarta.
In an official release on Wednesday (May 27, 2025), it was stated that the second strategy is focused on the long term, where PHE will aggressively enter open areas in search of new blocks with significant production potential.
The third strategy involves partnering with strategic collaborators to reduce exploration risks and enable technology transfer.
Furthermore, Muharram added that in the past three years, PHE has acquired eight new exploration working areas.
In addition to acquiring these new areas, PHE has managed to maintain an exploration growth rate of 37% and recorded the largest exploration reserves discovery in the last fifteen years.
In 2024, PHE successfully made two major discoveries: from the Tedong (TDG)-001 structure with 2C recoverable resources of 548 billion cubic feet of gas (bcfg), and from the Padang Pancuran (PPC)-1 structure with 2C recoverable resources of 140.6 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe).
“This success is concrete proof of the dedication and hard work of our exploration team, along with close collaboration with SKK Migas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). We hope this contributes to national oil and gas lifting, in support of the vision for energy self-sufficiency and national energy resilience,” said Muharram.
PHE will continue investing in upstream oil and gas operations and business management in accordance with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
PHE is also firmly committed to a Zero Tolerance on Bribery policy, ensuring fraud prevention measures are in place and the company remains free of bribery.
One such initiative is the implementation of an Anti-Bribery Management System (SMAP) standardized under ISO 37001:2016.
Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that increasing oil and gas production is one of Pertamina’s strategies to enhance energy self-sufficiency and navigate global challenges.
Through PHE’s exploration achievements, Pertamina believes there is strong potential to meet the targeted production growth.
“Upstream sector development is key for Pertamina to increase upstream oil and gas production, in support of the national production targets and energy self-sufficiency as envisioned by the government,” said Fadjar.
As a leading energy transition company, Pertamina is committed to supporting the net zero emissions target by 2060 through continued implementation of programs that contribute directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
All these efforts align with ESG principles across Pertamina’s business and operational lines.
