UK Invests in UNDP to Accelerate Sustainable Development

Enviro News Asia, New York – The Government of the United Kingdom has renewed its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through an investment of £11 million (approximately US$14.7 million) to support sustainable development efforts worldwide.

This renewed support comes at a critical time when the world faces unprecedented challenges — including health emergencies, climate change, conflicts, and natural disasters. The UK’s core funding will strengthen UNDP’s ability to respond swiftly to crises, safeguard lives and livelihoods, and protect hard-won development gains. Aligned with the new UNDP Strategic Plan (2026–2029), this contribution will enhance efforts to deliver integrated, scalable solutions that advance human development while protecting the planet.

The flexible nature of core funding allows UNDP to quickly adapt to emerging crises, prioritizing assistance for the most vulnerable communities — particularly women and girls, who are often the most affected. Whether supporting communities in Ukraine, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Haiti, or elsewhere, this funding ensures that development gains are preserved and community resilience continues to strengthen in the world’s most fragile regions.

Through its core resources, UNDP acts as a multiplier of development investments, maximizing every dollar for greater impact across more than 170 countries. In 2024, UNDP mobilized an additional US$7.40 for every US$1 of core funding received. These contributions also play a key role in reinforcing UNDP’s oversight and accountability functions, ensuring that programmes are implemented efficiently, effectively, and transparently. UNDP continues to be recognized as one of the most transparent international organizations globally.

The UK Government’s contribution reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing today’s global challenges. UNDP looks forward to continuing its close collaboration with the UK in their shared mission to build a more equitable and sustainable world where no one is left behind.
