UPNVJ Strengthens Internationalization through Adjunct Professor Program on Southeast Asian Security

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The International Relations Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta (UPNVJ) reinforced its internationalization agenda by hosting an Adjunct Professor Program featuring Prof. Dr. Mohd Kamarulnizam Bin Abdullah, Director of the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The four-day program addressed the growing complexity of security challenges in Southeast Asia, including terrorism, cross-border migration, border governance, and climate-related maritime risks.

UPNVJ organized the program at its Jakarta campus to enhance teaching quality, facilitate policy knowledge transfer, and promote international research collaboration. The initiative forms part of the university’s strategy to improve global academic competitiveness and strengthen expertise in regional security studies.

Rector of UPNVJ, Anter Venus, welcomed the program and emphasized its importance in exposing students and faculty members to Malaysia’s security policy practices and broader Southeast Asian dynamics. He stated that the collaboration aims to strengthen national security policy analysis within the university while initiating joint research and joint publications between UPNVJ and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The partnership also seeks to establish research clusters focusing on regional and border security.

Throughout the program, UPNVJ structured activities thematically. On 2 March 2026, Prof. Mohd Kamarulnizam delivered a public lecture titled “Board of Peace from the Malaysian Perspective,” attended by undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members. The lecture examined Malaysia’s approach to maintaining regional stability and peace.

On 3 March 2026, the faculty organized a workshop for lecturers titled “National Security Policy Design: From White Paper to Implementation.” The session explored the formulation of national security strategies, from drafting policy documents to operational implementation.

The following day, 4 March 2026, students participated in an interactive small-class lecture titled “Non-Traditional Security: Climate, Migration, and Maritime Risks in Southeast Asia.” The discussion analyzed how climate change, migration flows, and maritime vulnerabilities intersect with political and economic stability in the region.

The program concluded on 5 March 2026 with a curriculum consultation session titled “Curriculum Alignment and Global Benchmarking: Strengthening International Relations Studies in the Era of Non-Traditional Security and Regional Dynamics.” Faculty members reviewed curriculum alignment with global standards and discussed strategies to equip graduates with competencies relevant to evolving regional security challenges.

Through this initiative, UPNVJ reaffirmed its commitment to advancing higher education internationalization, expanding collaborative research networks, and strengthening its position in Southeast Asian security and international relations studies. (www.upnvj.ac.id)
