Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) has granted tuition fee waivers and financial assistance totaling Rp 148,902,000 to 31 students affected by flash floods and landslides in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.
The assistance was handed over directly by UPNVJ Vice Rector for Student Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Ria Maria Theresa, at Nusantara Room 1, the UPNVJ Rectorate Building in Jakarta. The program aims to ease the economic burden on students in the aftermath of the natural disasters that have struck several regions in Sumatra since late November 2025.
“UPNVJ is committed to always being present for its students, especially when they are facing emergency situations such as natural disasters. We hope this tuition assistance will help students remain focused on completing their studies, even as they cope with difficult conditions in their home regions,” Ria said in her remarks.
She added that the distribution of the assistance went through a strict verification process to ensure it was well targeted and received by students who truly need it. As of December 16, 2025, floods and landslides in the three provinces were reported to have claimed more than 1,000 lives and caused extensive damage to infrastructure and residential areas.
The beneficiaries come from various faculties, including 14 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business, 2 from the Faculty of Law, 7 from the Faculty of Health Sciences, 5 from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and 3 from the Faculty of Engineering.
In addition to tuition assistance, UPNVJ is also planning to provide further support in the form of living allowances and food packages for affected students. This initiative is part of the university’s social responsibility to ensure the continuity of students’ education amid economic hardship caused by the disaster.
“This initiative is in line with the spirit of national service and the values of inclusive education that characterize UPNVJ. Going forward, we will continue to develop similar programs to create an academic environment that is caring, resilient, and competitive,” Ria said.
Through this program, UPNVJ hopes to strengthen solidarity within the campus community while ensuring that no student is left behind in completing their education due to the impacts of natural disasters. (www.upnvj.ac.id)
