Viet Nam and Finland Sign Five-Year Scientific Cooperation Agreement to Advance Sustainable Development

Enviro News Asia, Helsinki – Viet Nam and Finland have formalized a new five-year cooperation framework to strengthen scientific collaboration and promote sustainable development. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Helsinki on October 21, 2025, during the official visit of General Secretary To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to Finland.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai, Permanent Vice President of VAST, and Prof. Dr. Sami Niemelä, Deputy Director General of FMI. The agreement lays the foundation for joint scientific research, data exchange, and technological development in fields including meteorology, oceanography, earth sciences, and climate forecasting.

Under the partnership, the two institutions will conduct joint research projects, develop and share atmospheric and oceanic measurement models, and exchange scientists, researchers, lecturers, and students. The cooperation will also include the use of remote sensing satellites, the establishment of marine and coastal observation networks, and the organization of international scientific workshops and training programs.

The five-year agreement is expected to deepen scientific collaboration between the two national research agencies, creating opportunities for innovation and knowledge sharing in data assimilation, modeling, and satellite applications.

This initiative aligns with the Strategic Partnership between Viet Nam and Finland, particularly the pillar of “Science, Technology, Innovation, and Digital Transformation.” Both sides emphasized that closer scientific ties will support the global goals of innovation-driven growth and sustainable development, while strengthening bilateral cooperation in climate resilience and environmental monitoring.
