Enviro News Asia, Türkiye — The year 2026 is expected to become one of the most significant periods for global environmental diplomacy, as governments, international organizations, researchers, businesses, and civil society groups prepare to participate in a series of major conferences focused on climate change, biodiversity conservation, land restoration, sustainable development, and environmental governance.
A highlight of the year will be the convening of three major United Nations Conferences of the Parties (COPs), covering climate change, biodiversity, and desertification. These meetings are expected to shape international environmental policies and strengthen global commitments toward achieving climate and sustainability targets.
The largest climate event of the year, the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November. The conference will build on outcomes from COP30 and is expected to focus on climate adaptation finance, implementation of fossil fuel transition roadmaps, and efforts to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030.
Earlier in the year, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP17 will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 17 to 28 August. The gathering will bring together representatives from 197 parties to discuss solutions for land degradation, drought resilience, and sustainable land management. Mongolia, where nearly 77 percent of land is affected by desertification, aims to use the event as a platform to promote large-scale land restoration initiatives.
Meanwhile, the 2026 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP17) is scheduled for 19 to 30 October in Yerevan, Armenia. Delegates will review progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and discuss strategies to address biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.
Beyond the UN-led conferences, a wide range of international events will address specific environmental and sustainability challenges. The Bonn Climate Change Conference, organized by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will take place in Germany from 8 to 18 June and serve as a key preparatory meeting ahead of COP31.
Climate finance will also take center stage during the Luxembourg International Climate Finance Days from 3 to 6 June. The event aims to mobilize investment and strengthen financial mechanisms needed to support climate action globally.
Food systems and land restoration will be prominent themes during the Regenerative Agriculture Forum in Brazil on 23 June, where experts will explore how agricultural practices can restore ecosystems, improve soil health, and enhance climate resilience.
Water security is another major focus area. The AIDA World Water Law Congress in Norway and the IWA World Water Congress in Scotland will bring together policymakers and technical experts to discuss water governance, climate adaptation, and sustainable management of freshwater resources.
Sustainable development goals will remain at the center of international discussions during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at United Nations Headquarters in New York in July. Participants will assess progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda and identify actions needed to accelerate implementation.
Technology and innovation will also feature prominently. The AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva will examine how artificial intelligence can support sustainable development, climate solutions, and environmental governance.
According to organizers across multiple events, the 2026 conference calendar reflects growing international recognition that climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and land degradation are interconnected challenges requiring coordinated global responses.
As countries approach the final years before the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals deadline, many of these gatherings are expected to focus not only on setting new ambitions but also on accelerating practical implementation and measurable outcomes. (*)
