Indonesian Scouts Explore Environmental Education at National Jamboree 2026

Enviro News Asia, Cibubur — Young Scouts from across Indonesia took part in environmental education activities organized by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) during the 12th National Scout Jamboree 2026 at Bumi Perkemahan and Graha Wisata Cibubur. The activities were held through the Global Development Village (GDV) and Saka Kalpataru education areas, providing participants with practical knowledge about waste management, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation.

The program brought together thousands of Scout participants from different regions, including East Java and Southwest Papua. Through interactive activities, participants were introduced to environmental practices that could be applied in their respective communities after returning home.

The activities were designed to make environmental education more practical and engaging for young people. Participants learned about waste sorting, waste banks, the use of maggots for organic waste management, and other approaches to responsible waste management. They were also introduced to climate change mitigation and biodiversity protection.

Jihan Naila Mirzani, a Scout participant from Kwarcab Kota Batu, East Java, said the environmental education provided at the Saka Kalpataru area gave her new knowledge about waste management. She traveled by land for approximately one and a half days from Batu to Cibubur to participate in the National Jamboree.

Jihan said she learned about maggots, waste banks, waste sorting, and proper waste disposal. The experience encouraged her to better understand how waste management can contribute to environmental protection.

Meanwhile, Wili Komboy, a Scout participant from Kwarcab Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua, traveled for several days by sea to reach Jakarta. His journey included a five-day sea voyage from Sorong, with stops in Bau-Bau, Makassar, and Surabaya before arriving at Tanjung Priok Port.

Komboy said the environmental lessons he received were important to bring back to his community in Papua. He highlighted the importance of disposing of waste properly to help prevent flooding and maintain a healthy environment.

Dadang Kusbiantoro, Head of the Central Saka Kalpataru and a representative of the KLH/BPLH Center for Environmental Generation Development, said the high level of interest among Scouts demonstrated the importance of introducing environmental issues to younger generations.

According to Dadang, the education program covers practical topics ranging from waste utilization and climate change mitigation to biodiversity conservation. The materials are presented in an accessible and applicable manner so that participants can implement the knowledge in their respective regions.

The participation of KLH/BPLH in the National Scout Jamboree is expected to strengthen environmental awareness among young people while encouraging them to become active agents of environmental protection. By bringing practical knowledge back to their communities, the Scouts are expected to contribute to building sustainable environmental practices across Indonesia. (*)
