Indonesia Ministry of Forestry Finalizes Formation of BP-GMN

Enviro News Asia, JAKARTA — The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut), in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek), is finalizing the formation of the National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BP-GMN). This new institution is designed with three primary mandates: ecosystem protection, recovery or restoration, and sustainable economic development for local communities.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni explained that these three mandates serve as an essential foundation to ensure the agency’s operational orientation goes beyond merely addressing damaged ecosystems, focusing instead on comprehensive wetland management. This step directly follows instructions from President Prabowo Subianto, who emphasized the importance of integrated landscape management to prevent forest and land fires.

The institutional formulation was agreed upon during the BP-GMN Formation Workshop held on October 1–2, 2026, at the Manggala Wanabakti Building, Jakarta. The drafting team officially submitted the Urgency Document to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto as a reference for drafting the Presidential Regulation (Rperpres) and submitting the initiative permit.

Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto emphasized that science-based approaches and university research will form the core foundation of the agency’s operations. Ecosystem management will subsequently apply Peatland Hydrological Unit (KHG) and Mangrove Landscape Unit (KLM) approaches that transcend administrative boundaries.

As a transitional step, the Ministry of Forestry, serving as the initiating agency, has begun inventorying modalities, data, programs, and resources across inter-ministerial and institutional bodies. This scheme is designed to ensure BP-GMN possesses a strong yet lean organizational structure, capable of operating effectively down to the field level. (*)
