Appreciated: Birth of an Orangutan at Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution, Riau

Enviro News Asia, Riau — The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (Balai Besar KSDA Riau) received a report from the management of the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution (Lembaga Konservasi/LK) regarding the birth of an orangutan.

Based on the report, the KSDA Riau medical team promptly visited the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution to conduct an examination of the animal.

The examination conducted by the medical team revealed that on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 09:03 AM (WIB), a male baby orangutan (Pongo abelii) was born at the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution in Kampar Regency, Riau.

The Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, in a press release from the Ministry of Forestry on Monday (May 19, 2025), had the opportunity to name the baby orangutan “Ade.” The newborn is the offspring of a female orangutan named Susi and a male named Yongki.

Both parent orangutans are entrusted animals under the care of the Riau KSDA Agency. The baby orangutan is reported to be in healthy condition and has started actively nursing from its mother.

The birth of this orangutan adds to the orangutan population at the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution. Orangutans are rare and endemic wildlife species of Indonesia and are currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

The medical team from the KSDA Riau continues to monitor both the baby orangutan and its mother to ensure the baby’s growth and health.

Supartono, Head of the KSDA Riau, also provided guidance and recommendations to the animal keepers and the management of the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution to supply food in adequate quality and quantity to meet the mother’s nutritional needs.

KSDA Riau continues to provide training and coordination with the Kasang Kulim Conservation Institution to ensure a healthy and safe environment that supports optimal wildlife welfare in line with ethical and animal welfare principles.

The Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), Satyawan Pudyatmoko, extended his congratulations and appreciation for the birth of the Sumatran orangutan.

The birth of a baby in a conservation institution is considered a success in implementing controlled breeding programs, as well as meeting the standards of wildlife management and care. *
