Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry highlighted the importance of sustainable forests, biodiversity conservation, and national solidarity during the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. The ministry participated in the Kesenian Rakyat Dalam Kebersamaan Kemerdekaan celebration, using the event to promote forest conservation as a foundation for environmental sustainability and public welfare.
The activities began with a moment of silence and a joint prayer to express sympathy and solidarity with communities affected by natural disasters in various parts of Indonesia. The ministry emphasized that the spirit of independence should also be reflected through social concern and national solidarity.
Under the theme “Sustainable Forests, Beautiful Environment, Prosperous People” and the tagline “Together Protecting Nature for a Developed Indonesia,” the Ministry of Forestry highlighted the vital functions of Indonesia’s forests as carbon sinks, water regulators, and habitats for the country’s rich biodiversity.
The ministry presented a visual representation of Indonesia’s forest landscapes featuring three key wildlife species: the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran elephant, and orangutan. The symbols underscored the importance of protecting forest ecosystems to safeguard biodiversity while supporting the livelihoods and well-being of communities.
Through the cultural and educational exhibition, the Ministry of Forestry promoted the message that forest conservation and national development must progress together. Its approach emphasizes sustainable and equitable forest management that maintains ecological balance while generating tangible benefits for society.
The forestry message was also aligned with environmental restoration initiatives promoted by the Ministry of Environment, including the Indonesia ASRI Movement and the Ecological Repentance initiative. These programs encourage better waste management from upstream to downstream while creating opportunities for a circular economy and green jobs.
To strengthen public engagement, the Ministry of Forestry also involved content creator Jerhemy Owen as a representative of environmentally conscious young people. His participation was intended to help connect forest conservation messages with younger audiences and encourage practical actions such as tree planting and wildlife habitat protection.
The ministry emphasized that protecting Indonesia’s forests is closely connected to safeguarding the country’s ecological and national sovereignty. Sustainable forests and healthy ecosystems are expected to provide a foundation for biodiversity conservation, community welfare, and Indonesia’s long-term development.
Through the 81st Independence Anniversary activities, the Ministry of Forestry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable forest management while encouraging public participation in protecting Indonesia’s natural heritage. The initiative seeks to strengthen collective action toward a sovereign, equitable, prosperous, and environmentally sustainable Indonesia. (*)
