Commemoration of World Environment Day Should Not Be Merely Ceremonial

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasized that the 2025 World Environment Day commemoration on June 5 should not be limited to ceremonial events.

“Use this moment to build collective awareness accompanied by concrete actions for the environment, especially in addressing the waste issue, considering that waste is currently in a state of emergency in most regions of Indonesia,” said Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq in his official statement on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

The Minister of Environment has issued Circular Letter No. 5 of 2025, which among other things, requests regional leaders to organize Joint Assemblies and Plastic Waste Cleanup Actions.

These activities are encouraged to involve government officials, students, university students, communities, and other segments of society to clean rivers, beaches, school environments, and residential areas from plastic waste together.

Plastic waste management is a top priority in line with the global theme of this year’s World Environment Day, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” which is translated into Indonesian as “Hentikan Polusi Plastik.” This theme was chosen in consideration of the significant impacts of plastic pollution on the environment, public health, and other living beings.

Controlling plastic waste has become increasingly critical, as data from 2023 shows that Indonesia generated approximately 56.6 million tons of waste, with 18%—or around 10 million tons—being plastic waste.

However, only 39.01% of the total waste was properly managed. This situation places Indonesia in an environmental emergency that must be addressed systematically and comprehensively. (*)
